In a rather disappointing home match against the reigning champions, Chelsea lost to Liverpool by two goals to none at Stamford Bridge earlier today. The Blues were clearly the underdogs from the first minute with some glimpses of hope as the match progressed.
Athough Liverpool were in cruise control with possession, the match was fairly even until the 45th minute when Andreas Christensen got set off for a foul on Sadio Mane.
The latter was racing on to a defense breaking pass by skipper Jordan Henderson when he was bundled over by the defender. With an initial yellow card for the offense, referee Paul Tierney handed him a red card after consulting the VAR.
Mane headed in Roberto Firmino’s cross on the 50th minute as a result deft touches by Sallah and Firmino.
Liverpool doubled their lead through Mane after a blunder by the Kepa who has in recent months being under pressure for poor performances. This comes after the gaffer Frank Lampard expressed his faith in the goalkeeper in his post match interview at Brighton.
Jorgen Klopp handed his new signing Thiago Alcantara a debut after the break, although he was said to have had few training sessions with the team since his arrival.
The day ended with a missed spot kick from the ever reliable Jorginho after Timo Werner was fouled by Thiago in the box.
